Italian Immersion Archives

Hi-

This fall I’ll be signing up for the air force. My aunt did the same thing about 15 years ago and she was studying Farsi and Italian and was sent to a military immersion school out in California. I’m studying Japanese and Korean (have been for 4+ years), and wondered if I might be able to do the same thing. I would ask her … but she’s on vacation right now. :/
Thank you!

Would it confuse me to learn Italian?

I am 17 years old, I speak English as my native language, and Spanish through school and immersion programs (not fluently but about 7/8 of the way). I absolutely love languages, and I am eager to keep learning more but I am wondering if learning Italian before I am more or less fluent in Spanish is a bad idea considering their similarity.

I speak English, Spanish, and Italian, and for all of the classes I’ve taken over these, it has been full language immersion from day 1. I can’t imagine the classical languages are like this, especially Latin. So what is a typical class like. Is English spoken or must you speak in the foreign language? What do you do. Any insight into this issue would be appreciated. Also, I’m looking for specifics for Latin vs Greek. Thanks.

I am an intermediate-level Spanish speaker (3-4 years)… not fluent, but enough reading comprehension to handle a newspaper and enough verbal skill to STRUGGLE through a very basic chat. I’m at a point where I’m starting to lose interest a bit… and can’t decide whether I should take up a new language (I’m thinking either Italian or French), or find a way to reignite my interest in Spanish.

I have a bad habit of fluttering about from one hobby to the next without following through… a "jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none" type thing. So it would be nice to follow through and achieve Spanish fluency. On the other hand, language study for me is purely a personal hobby (not job-related)… and at the moment I’m more interested in other languages. I’m also not sure that I COULD deepen my Spanish much further without an immersion experience, which wouldn’t be practical any time soon.

I know this is really a question that only I can answer, but I’d still love to hear thoughts and insights.

Which language should be a priority?

My situation:
I’m living in a French province, and this school year I went to a French immersion program. I’ve finished and learned French pretty good I should say, my professors were very delighted and I even got awards. My main teacher suggested to not leave practicing a bit this summer, since next year I’m going to a regular French school.

This summer though, I also want to start seriously learning Dutch. I’ve looked over at some of the basic grammar and it’s simple enough (nothing some practice couldn’t set down in my head).

The thing is, I’m worried I might start getting confused among the two language and just give me a huge headache.
I want to learn Dutch but I don’t want to mess up my French.
What should I do?

P.S. I’m used to learn new languages: my mother tongues are Spanish and Italian and I speak English since four years.
(Don`t want to be bizarrely specific but) Are there any ARTICLES explaining how the brain learns new languages and/or if the possibility of forgetting and mixing two languages is highly possible?
This one seems pretty good:

Anyways, back to the question? ↑

One of my best friends is Italian and visits Italy with her family regularly. She said I could go with her next summer, but I don't want to look like I'm completely ignorant and not know the language at all. So, I'd like to learn as much Italian as possible and be at least a little bit knowledgeable. I have a program called "Instant Immersion Italian" that my dad found in his office, but I was wondering if there were any relatively cheap programs (i.e., not Rosetta Stone) that are good to learn a language? This II one, from what I've glanced at it, only seems to teach vocabulary and not much of stringing sentences together and making sense.

Thanks so much for your time!
I'd prefer a program that teaches verb conjugations, grammar rules, and things like that…if it exists, of course! :)

I really care about people, and I work hard to apply myself in many areas like academics, athletics and the arts. Whether I am at school, home, competitive soccer, chorus or theater, what drives me to pursue these interests is my love to discover, learn, travel and understand. I would like to discuss my interests in travel and politics in particular.

In my life, I have been lucky to travel around the world and view beautiful places and wonders such as exploring the islands of Greece, trekking through the rain forests of Cost Rica and viewing the ruins of Pompeii. One country that I have had the experience of total immersion is Italy. Spending a month at a time in this country has provided me the exposure and understanding of the Italian culture. Italy is much different then America in many ways. Two of these ways are communications (language) and lifestyle. While I have had the fortune of growing up in a multicultural home, my love for experiencing different country’s cultures has made me want to travel to the places that I have not yet seen. I want to explore these places because I want to know what the “real” world is like so I can improve my focus on the world. In the future I will use this to study abroad in college and have international studies as my career.
I could use the attributes of experiencing these different cultures in the future by applying my skills when I visit more places and my drive to understand what makes people who they are and what they do.

I am also into politics and love to debate about my beliefs on the Democratic Party. The reason I like to debate is because it gives me an opportunity to express my thoughts and understand other people’s opinions. I participated on a blog website where people debate. The website is a good place for people like me to express their opinions about politics. Going forward I would like to learn and do my active part in helping our country solve problems such as the environment, and developing altrernet enrgy source

In summary, I am a person who likes to help others anywhere around the world. I feel that if I were accepted to this program I could apply my skills and caring attitude towards helping people around the world. I have always been interested in International Studies, and I hope to get the opportunity to get accepted into the program. Thank you for your time.
I often think about how I can make a difference in not only my friend’s and family’s lives but people’s lives around the world.

Sincerely,

Christopher Cicio
