Italian Tutors Archives

Okay, here’s the deal:

I’m a jr. in high school. I am in the International Baccalaureate program at my school (which means i’m in all IB classes with the exception of theatre production co. which I will have 4 years of by the time I apply.

When I apply I will also have had 3 years of track (1 year of varsity), 5 math, 4 english, 5 science (3 years of lab if we’re not counting integrated physics and chemistry labs, 4 if we are), 4 years of spanish (i’m considered fluent by both my teacher and tutor) and be taking Italian 2, 4 years of history, officer in my theatre production co., officer in NHS as well as a 2yr. member, 2 year member of a community service club, LOTS of community service including work in an ICU burn unit and a job as a Senate Page.

I will also be an IB Diploma Candidate, with a 4.0 GPA (unweighted), and an SAT score of about 2160.

Other sports/interesting things about me would include – a decorated horseback rider, a decorated archer, and a piano and guitar player.

So, taking all that into consideration (i’m taking SAT subject tests and the ACT, I just haven’t done it yet) what do you think?
I also have legacy at UVA and will thus be considered an in-state student for acceptance purposes.

University Acceptance?

I just want to ask about opinions about how I am doing so far for university acceptance.

Just to start off my gpa starting from 9th grade to 10th
are:

2.71 (:P I know it sucks)
2.87 (better in 10th btw)

However, these were gained doing the British IGCSE program.
For those exams I got the final IGCSE grades of:

A* in Chem, Bio, and English Language
A in History, English Literature, and Geography
B in Math (my worst)

I am also doing the IB diploma program right now. In the junior year, my gpa (from an IB equivalent amount) would equal honors to high honors level 3.2-3.5 ish). My strongest subjects are:

chem ( around a 6) HL
Bio ( roughly 7) HL
History ( 7) HL

English ( 6 ) SL
Italian AB ( 5 to 6) SL
Math (3-4 worst again :p) SL

So yeah that wraps up the academic side of things. I want to try to take pre-med in the states and also just wondering whether or not I’m on fair track to that (I know math needs BIG improvement). I’m still in the junior year.

As for the extra-curriculars:

-I’ve been to 2 international THIMUN sessions
-2 national debates concerning global issues
-tutoring in chem
-and soon I’m going to volunteer for a soup kitchen and the red cross association.
-Definitely more

That pretty much sums up my entire situation at the moment. I want to try and aim for medium to high level universities (not quite Ivy, but just a step below, top 60 or so). What are my chances? I dont know about the SAT just yet. Opinions would be nice! Thanks!

Problem caused by school? HELP!?

OK, i am 13 and have trouble with school. It is my second year at secondary school (Year 8). For some reason (but I dont have a clue what it is) Going to school fills me with dread. I dont know why though. At school, i am popular, I have a whole bunch of friends. In lessons, I am almost top of the class, in the top sett for all the subjects. My test marks are extremely good. I may not be a teacher’s pet, but most of the teachers like me well enough. I have no reason to dislike school. But for some reason, i hate it more than anything I’ve ever hated. Just thinking of the corridors and lockers and all the lessons makes me shake, and I feel sick.
At school, especially during the lessons, but sometimes in the assemblies and breaks, I feel constantly like I’m about to be sick. I feel hot and clammy, and people say I go pale/yellowy-white. My stomach churns, the room feels extremely stuffy. Usually when i’m at home, i’m perfectly all right. It’s odd. I have been to a doctor and a specialist, so far they can find nothing physically wrong with me.
I feel like something really dreadful happened at school, but I cant remember what it is. This week, i’ve had half-term, so no school for a week. I’m back on Monday, though. Just today, I thought about school properly for the first time this week. It actually made me shake, I needed to sit down fast, and I felt like i was going to be physically sick. I dont think I could cope if I went back another day.
Just a year and a half ago, at my last school, in four years, I’d barely had a days’ absence. I actually liked it. I actually went in when I had a choice not to (when I was ill, on a number of occaisions my mum said i didnt have to go in, but I did). I was always really, really strong, mentally strong, and barely ever ill. I remember thinking once to myself, "i’m the healthiest person i know". Now, i’m actually the most UN-healthy person i know.
To be home- tutored would be the best thing that ever happened to me. My mum actually teaches French and Italian, and those are actually the two language subjects I learn at school. My sister has a maths tutor who could tutor me as well. Those are seven of the twenty-five lessons I do at school, four language lessons a week, and three maths lessons a week. I do horse-riding, which could cover for my two P.E lessons i do a week, and I can play the piano, which could cover my music lesson. I wouldnt really need to do my Drama, art and D.T lessons as they aren’t key subjects. I’m sure I could find a science tutor, and maybe a Humanities tutor as well. I could make it work, i know I could, though I admit i’d miss the company of my friends all day, but I could still see them. But I know my parents wouldnt let me, unless i went into some kind of mental depression about school. My parents know I dont like school much, but thats an understatement. I have JUST managed to cope for the last year and a bit, but I feel I NEED to do SOMETHING now. please give advice, or tell me how to deal with school/ overcome my dislike (fear?) of it, or how to persuade my parents about home schooling.
Thanks so much x

**is My dad is going crazy**?

okay so we just had mid terms
not so good
chemistry – 60% however i did better than the average for THE ENTIRE district as in two high schools
History – 77% okay it required us to read long passages and i have ADD, i dont see how all 23% is my fault
Italian – 65% sorry but foreign languages isnt my thing
Photo – 85% apparently to my dad electives dont count
Language Arts – 77% okay our teacher didnt know how to do the grammer, which knocked off 10pts

still need to get phys ed, which i definatly did good in
and geometry, which i most likely got a B- or less

my dad wants to send me to this place called sylvan or something because of these grades
for the record the first two marking periods i got one C, every other grade being B or higher

he refuses to accept my ADD, thinks im lazy and just dont care at all, i do care but it also happens to be that i really am not into anything we are learning yet, i am into law and communications. Whether it be Police or court both sound great to me.

I read online this Sylvan place is a scam that basically just takes your money and gives you low line tutors but the internet does lie

is he crazy, am i just a bum who doesnt care about school, or am i just confused

BTW, im in SGA, so saying i dont care about school will make you sound stupid
hey guys it solved itself he said he thinks the year average is fine, all answers were helpful but the last one who was just a complete jerk

Student looking for a tutoring job?

My name is Adriana, and I am 17 years old. I am fluent in the Italian language, and I am looking to make some extra money. Considering that Italian is a skill I am extremely gifted in because it is technically my first language, I was thinking of tutoring students in Italian I, II, and III. How would I go about that? What should I charge? Flat rate or Hourly rate? Any other advice would be great!

Italian Songs and artists?

I’m learning italian now..My tutor says I need to listen to italian songs…So I need suggestions ?

What kind of job could I have?

I speak English, Spanish, Chinese, college undergrad bio major for 3 years, worked some retail jobs in high school, an Italian restaurant for 9 months in 2008, tutoring center in 09, volunteered at goodwill…

I don’t belong in a restaurant because I confuse people’s wines, orders, forget things and mess up too frequently. I want a little more pay than working retail. What else could I do as a part time job in college?
